How to Install a Car Battery

Male mechanic changing car battery

It isn’t particularly difficult to learn how to install a car battery, but many drivers stay away from this DIY service task because they’re uncomfortable working with high-powered electrical components. We don’t blame you, and we’re more than happy to take care of your next car battery installation in Eatontown.

However, we also want you to feel confident if you decide to take care of replacement on your own. We’ve laid out everything you need to know to install a new car battery when you need to.

Car Battery Installation: What You’ll Need

OEM-approved batteries tend to last longer than aftermarket substitutes. If you need a new battery for your Land Rover, pick one up at our parts department, just a short drive from Rumson or Colts Neck. You’ll also need safety gear, including thick rubber gloves and safety glasses or goggles.

Getting the job done right will also require you to pick up a wrench, a wire brush, pliers, anti-corrosion spray, and battery cleaning solution. Even if all of these may not be strictly necessary, having them on hand will help you be prepared for anything.

Tools You’ll Need

  • OEM-approved battery
  • Rubber gloves
  • Safety glasses or goggles
  • Wrench
  • Wire brush
  • Pliers
  • Anti-corrosion spray
  • Battery cleaning solution

How to Install a Car Battery in 9 Steps

Here’s how to install a car battery, from start to finish, at home in Red Bank or Point Pleasant:

  1. Turn off your engine and activate the parking brake. Give it a little time to cool, then open the hood and locate the battery. Double-check to ensure that you’ve got all of the required safety gear.
  2. Loosen the nut that connects the black (negative/-) cable to the battery. You should be able to twist it and pull it off the terminal as soon as it’s loose. (Don’t try to force it off if it doesn’t come loose right away.)
  3. Next, remove the red battery cable from the positive terminal. Don’t let the terminals or cable-ends touch until both are removed from the electrical source.
  4. Loosen the battery hold-down clamps and get ready to remove it. The battery is heavy, and dropping it could cause an acid leak.
  5. If you notice corrosion in your battery tray or on the hold-down clamp, spray a little anti-corrosion product or use a mix of baking soda and water to clear it away.
  6. Once the area is clean and clear, set the new battery gently into its place. Take a little bit of anti-corrosion solution, and apply it to both terminals before you connect the cables.
  7. Attach the red cable to the positive/+ terminal, and then carefully attach the black cable to the negative/- terminal. Remember, touching the cable-ends together when only one is connected will cause a spark.
  8. Double-check both connections to make sure they’re secure. Lock the hold-down clamps into place and make sure that you can’t move the battery by force.
  9. Close everything up and start the car! If it doesn’t start, double-check the terminal connections.

Remember to follow local regulations regarding the recycling or disposal of your old battery! If you’re having trouble starting your car, even after installing a new battery, the issue could also have to do with your spark plugsContact our service team if you’re unsure of what to do next.

How to Know If Your Car Battery Needs to Be Replaced

If you’re wondering about how often to replace a car battery, there’s a very good chance that you’ve noticed one or more of the following issues on your drives through Rumson:

  • Dim headlights, or noticeable variations in brightness
  • More than one jump start in recent memory
  • Slower start up with key or push-button
  • Unusual power fluctuations, or trouble charging devices
  • A battery warning light has appeared on your dashboard

Although it’s possible to replace a car battery at home, many drivers prefer to leave this task up to the experts at our service center.

How Much is a Replacement Car Battery?

The cost of a replacement car battery can range between $75 and $200, at least where gas-powered automobiles are concerned. For electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, costs can be much higher, between $1,000 and $6,000.
