The Future of Land Rover SUVs

With the release of their latest plug-in hybrid powertrain—the P440e—Land Rover’s EV plans are starting to shape up. Although our lineup has long included models with efficient gas-powered and mild-hybrid powertrains, we couldn’t be more excited for the release of the first-ever Land Rover EVs, currently slated for model-year 2024. The Range Rover and the Range Rover Sport, which are the first to offer the PHEV setup, will also be the first to go all-electric.

Land Rover Monmouth is proud to provide Colts Neck and Rumson-area drivers with updates on the future of the Land Rover brand, and we’ll be bringing you information on a wide variety of EV-related topics as this car manufacturer’s EV plans begin to come to fruition. Here’s what we can share so far:

  • By the end of this decade, every Land Rover vehicle will be available with a 100% electric powertrain.
  • Land Rover’s EV plans will allow the brand to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across their operations by up to 46% during the same time period.
  • Land Rover plans to be a zero-carbon business by 2039.

Whether you’re currently looking for a plug-in hybrid in Rumson or you think you’d like to buy an EV in several years’ time, our guide to the future of Land Rover can help you move forward with confidence.

Which Type of Electric Vehicle is Right for You?

The world is changing, and Land Rover SUVs are changing too. Our current lineup includes a variety of gas-powered, mild hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles, and 100% electric models will be arriving before too long! If you’re getting ready to upgrade, it’s important to get familiar with every type of electric vehicle on the market today, and we’ve laid out everything you need to know to find the right fit.

How Many Types of Electric Vehicles Are There?

You already know that the world of EVs is quickly expanding, but how many types of electric vehicles are there on the roads today? Four or five—depending on whether or not you count mild hybrids—but it’s worth noting that not all of them are available near Eatontown or Red Bank. Still, it’s important to be aware of what’s out there:

Mild Hybrid Vehicles

The term “mild hybrid” refers to vehicles that rely primarily on gas-powered engines, but also include a small electric motor that improves torque output and efficiency. Many of today’s gas-powered Land Rover SUVs are actually mild hybrids, and as automakers start to transition their lineups, this technology has become increasingly common across the industry.

Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Hybrid vehicles are the most similar to gasoline-powered cars that readers will be most familiar with. These models are powered by a gas engine that has been paired with an electric motor, but the experience of driving a traditional hybrid isn’t too different from what you might be used to.

Although hybrid models may require certain services that gasoline-powered models don’t need, the biggest difference between these two types of vehicles is in the numbers: hybrids get much better gas mileage than traditional vehicles, so your pit stops will be fewer and farther between.

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (or PHEVs) are similar to traditional hybrids in that they combine a gas-powered engine with an electric motor. However, plug-in hybrids have much larger battery packs than traditional hybrids. As a result, they are generally able to offer between 15 and 35 miles of all-electric range—as long as you’ve found the time to charge up at home or in public.

Land Rover Plug-In Hybrid vehicles do even better. The 2023 Range Rover PHEV, with its P440e powertrain, can offer up to 48 miles of all-electric range on a full charge. That means you can knock out your daily commute, charge up at the end of the day, and start leading a day-to-day life that doesn’t require gasoline at all.

Battery Electric Vehicles

A battery electric vehicle (or BEV) is what most people think of when they think of an electric car—and so BEVs are commonly referred to simply as EVs. Unlike the hybrid models we’ve already looked at, battery electric vehicles do not have gasoline engines. Instead, they rely on larger battery packs that often provide between 200 and 300 miles of range per charge.

This type of electric vehicle channels power from the battery to one or more electric motors; components including the inverter and the control module play intermediary roles.

Fully electric Land Rover SUVs are joining the lineup for model-year 2024, so let us know if you’d like to be informed when this technology becomes available!

Hydrogen Electric Vehicles (Fuel Cell)

Unlike the types of electric vehicles that we’ve reviewed so far, hydrogen electric vehicles utilize an electric motor paired with a fuel cell stack and a hydrogen storage tank. Fuel cell vehicles can be refueled in minutes since the way that you add hydrogen fuel to your tank is similar to the way that someone would fill their car with gas. However, this infrastructure is rare, so hydrogen electric vehicles are only sold in select locations.

Finding the Right Electric Vehicle For You

So, you know you want to improve your Rumson and Colts Neck drives with some form of electrification—and now you understand that you have many different options. Which type of electric vehicle is going to feel like the right fit? Keep these points in mind:

  • A traditional hybrid is a solid choice if you want to save on gasoline without changing anything about the way you drive or refuel.
  • A plug-in hybrid can give you a taste of what it’s like to drive an EV if you’re not quite ready to make the leap into full electrification, or if you often encounter situations where you may need to rely on gas. In other words, a PHEV is perfect for someone who wants to go electric for the workweek and take long-distance road trips on the weekend.
  • There’s no way around the fact that electric vehicles are the future. Although EVs are currently more expensive than the other options, they are eligible for tax incentives that can reduce your costs. They’re also less expensive to maintain than gas-powered cars and hybrids over the long term. You may need to set up a home charging station and change some elements of your routine, but you’ll be far ahead of the curve from there on out.
