More Powerful Than a Locomotive: The Land Rover Discovery Sport Vs. The Train

While the towing capacity for the 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport is rated at 4,409 pounds, Land Rover recently set to prove that the Land Rover Discovery Sport is actually capable of so much more. This past summer, Land Rover showed off the incredible capacity of the Land Rover Discovery Sport by pulling a 100 metric ton train in Switzerland. This definitely falls into the category of “things not to try at home” – the stunt might void your warranty, but it sure does help give you an idea of just how capable the new Land Rover model really is.

The Power That Lies Within

100 metric tons is equivalent to about 238,000 pounds. Take a moment to consider that,  the Land Rover Discovery Sport lugging an object of such incredible weight across the historic Hemishofen Bridge, crossing above the River Rhine. Also worth noting is the fact that this was a completely stock Land Rover Discovery Sport, with the exception of the special rail wheel fittings used to allow the vehicle to traverse the railroad safely. Both the 2.0L turbodiesel four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive system were completely to normal Land Rover production specifications.

While that turbodiesel four-cylinder engine, which produces 180 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, is standard on Land Rover models in Europe, unfortunately for drivers in the Rumson and Colts Neck area, it’s not yet available here in the United States. Fortunately, you can still obtain the Land Rover Discovery Sport with a powerful and fuel-efficient version of that 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, able to call on 240 hp and create 250 lb-ft of torque. This engine achieves up to an EPA-estimated 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

The drivetrain on the 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport, however, which includes the famed Land Rover all-wheel drive system with Terrain Response®, is the very same one included in the European version that pulled that train across the mighty Rhine. In short, the Land Rover Discovery Sport is more than capable of getting the job done for you, whether that means pulling a boat or trailer or tackling any rugged, off-road terrain and inclement weather you can throw at it.
