How to Check Oil Level in a Car

Even though most new Land Rover models no longer include traditional dipsticks, most vehicles on the roads near Rumson and Colts Neck still use them. To check the oil in your car, make sure your vehicle is parked on level ground and let the engine cool completely. Pop the hood and follow these instructions to check the oil level in your car:

  1. Find the dipstick. Typically, it’s just to the left or right of the engine.
  2. Remove the dipstick from the sheath and wipe it clean with a rag. Check the oil’s consistency and color. Is it dark black or full of metal particles? There’s a problem and you should schedule a service appointment
  3. With the dipstick clean, reinsert it back into the sheath and draw it out once more. From this, you’ll get an accurate reading.
  4. See if the level falls between the “Min” and “Max” lines or the cross-hatched area. If so, you have an adequate amount of oil.

If you decide that you need to add more oil, make sure to pick up an approved oil product from our parts department. Check your owner’s manual to find out what’s required in your vehicle.

How to Use Your Land Rover Electronic Oil Monitor

Checking your car’s oil is even easier with newer Land Rover vehicles, since they display their current oil levels on the dashboard. Here’s how to check your car’s oil with the Land Rover Electronic oil monitor:

  1. Ensure your car is parked on level ground.
  2. Turn off the ignition and wait ten minutes so the oil can settle back into the pan.
  3. Turn the ignition to position one or press the start button without pressing on the brake pedal. You need your electronics to turn on, but the engine off.
  4. Search through the options on the display beneath your gauge cluster. You’ll need to choose either ‘Service Menu’ or ‘Vehicle Information’.
  5. Now, choose ‘Oil Level’. After a few minutes, your oil level will be displayed.

If your monitor indicates you need more oil, open the hood and find the oil cap. Refill the oil slowly and with a funnel. It’s really that easy!
