Many of the models in the new Land Rover inventory at Land Rover Monmouth come equipped with CommandShift™ paddle shifters. What are paddle shifters? CommandShift™ paddle shifters are a feature that’s standard or available on many of the models in the new Land Rover inventory at Land Rover Monmouth, including the Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Evoque. If you’re not sure how to use paddle shifters, you came to the right place. This guide from the service team at Land Rover Monmouth will explain how to use shifting paddles successfully as you cruise the roads in and around Rumson.

What Do Paddle Shifters Do?

Paddle shifters are most commonly available on sportier vehicles and trim levels, and are usually located on or near the steering wheel. What do paddle shifters do? Paddle shifters allow you to override your automatic transmission and change gears manually. One paddle brings you down a gear, and the other paddle brings you up a gear. When you use a paddle, the automatic clutch receives an electronic signal for gear selection and the gear shifts. Paddle shifters offer more control to help you manage your RPMs for a more exhilarating drive. In addition, having the ability to downshift when coming to a stop can help to extend the life of your brake pads

Tips on How to Use Shifting Paddles

Now it’s time to find out how to use paddle shifters. First of all, you’ll need to enter manual or “S” mode. This puts you in full control to upshift with the right-hand paddle and downshift with the left-hand paddle. Knowing how to use shifting paddles correctly allows you to effectively switch gears manually on Colts Neck and Red Bank roads. The paddle shift on the steering wheel won’t harm the transmission as long as you:

  • Upshift before the engine reaches the lower limit of the higher gear
  • Downshift before reaching the upper limit of the lower gear
  • Press one paddle while the other is being held down or press both paddles at the same time
  • Attempt to shift to third or higher while stationary

If you don’t wish to use the paddle shifters, just enter “D” mode and the automatic transmission will take over.
