How Do Hybrid Cars Work?

2023 Range Rover PHEV

Hybrid cars have become more and more popular in Red Bank, so what is a hybrid car, and how does it work? Hybrid cars run on both gas and electricity simultaneously, which provides tons of benefits for the modern driver. Not only will you enjoy sky-high fuel economy figures, but also easy maintenance with no need to plug into a charger. Get to know how hybrid cars work with information from our service center, and be sure to visit us in Eatontown to continue your Land Rover research.

Parallel Hybrid vs. Series Hybrid Vehicles

So, how do hybrid cars work? Hybrid models use power from a traditional internal combustion engine, as well as an electric battery. But, different designs use these two components in different ways:

Parallel Hybrid

Most hybrids on the market are parallel hybrids. This means that both the electric motor and the gasoline engine connect to the transmission. Both gas and electric power are blended together as you drive, so you get the best performance and fuel economy possible.

Series Hybrid

Series hybrids also use an electric motor paired with a gasoline engine. But in this design, only the electric motor is paired with the transmission. This means the electric motor is the main source of power, and the gas engine just acts as a generator for the motor.

How Do Hybrid Cars Work Compared to Plug-In Electric Vehicles?

Now you know how hybrid cars work, but what about plug-in electric cars? While electric cars run on pure electricity, plug-in hybrids use both gas and electric power. However, they operate differently than a traditional hybrid.

  • Plug-in hybrids have much bigger batteries than traditional hybrids, so they can drive on electricity alone if you want. Hybrids cannot.
  • Plug-in hybrids have a shorter electric range than an EV, but for short trips around Rumson, you can bypass gasoline entirely.
  • When driving long distances around Colts Neck, you can use the gasoline engine for convenience.
  • While electric vehicles can take hours or days to charge, most plug-in hybrids only take around 1 to 4 hours to charge completely.
