Discovery or Explorer: Performance and Utility

  • Base Engines – The Land Rover Discovery comes standard with a 3.0L supercharged V6, providing 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. With the Ford Explorer, you’ll have to settle for a standard 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4, offering 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque.
  • Engine Options – The Discovery offers just one engine upgrade: a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6. Although the Explorer offers two additional options, the Land Rover upgrade offers more torque than either of the competitor’s upgrades.
  • Towing Power and Utility – The Land Rover Discovery can tow up to 8,201 pounds! That gives it a serious advantage over the Ford Explorer, which can only pull around 5,600 pounds when properly equipped.
  • Off-Road Performance – Every Land Rover Discovery comes standard with 4WD. Although the Explorer also offers 4WD as an upgrade, the Land Rover offers many more towing features, including the celebrated Terrain Response® 2. The Discovery also offers 8.5 inches of ground clearance, compared to 7.9 inches in the Explorer

A lifted Land Rover Discovery can take you even further from the beaten path, so check with our parts department if you’re interested in pursuing upgrades.

Discovery or Explorer: Amenities and Standard Features

Both the Ford Explorer and the Land Rover Discovery come standard with a rearview camera, Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto®, and Bluetooth® Connectivity. However, if you look past the basics, you’ll find that the Land Rover Discovery gives drivers so much more to get excited about.

Each of the following amenities is standard on the base Discovery trim. If you want any of these features in the Ford Explorer, you’ll need to upgrade your trim or pay for upgrades:

  • Dual moonroof
  • Running boards
  • Performance tires
  • Keyless start
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Leather seats
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Auto-leveling headlights
  • And more!

The Land Rover Discovery also comes with standard seating for five, but a third row can be added as an upgrade. Although the Ford Explorer seats seven passengers standard, we think that many Point Pleasant and Middletown drivers will appreciate having the option to choose.
