With serious storm clouds brewing, and swirling overhead for that matter, the fourth match of the Colts Neck Polo season got underway as Shannon Hill and Colts Neck Polo's Team Land Rover Monmouth faced-off for the second time this season on the field at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck, NJ.
With seemingly evidence of a desire to rectify a wrong, the Shannon Hill team were demons on horseback looking to right a season-opener wrong, that of their first loss of the season, which occured only three weeks earlier in a high scoring match that ended 16-8 in favor of Colts Neck.
The match was a crowd pleaser and both teams performed well. Gasps went up from the crowd when one of the players from Shannon Hill was struck hard in the spine by a ball. Thankfully, after a brief time-out, the player was able to resume play. This occurred during the last half of play in the sixth and final chukker.
A subsequent gasp went up from the crowd as a loud laugh, or two, was heard from mid-field when the announcer cried, "Uh oh, looks like our umpire's got no balls!" Well, we weren't quite sure what to make of this declaration, or even call it for that matter, a foul perhaps? The situation was quickly rectified as the most excellent and professional announcer quickly followed up with, "Of course, the umpire's bag can only hold six balls."
Indeed, the Shannon Hill team played an extremely spirited game against Colts Neck winning 9-5. A good time was had by all and charity was served thanks to CNP's Team Land Rover Monmouth. And, as we understand it, in the end, when all was said and done, the ump got balls!
