Pink Panthers:
Not Macho-Looking Perhaps, But It Worked!

British SAS 'Pink Panther' Land Rover
By JOSEPH V. KUCA
The military need for a long-range reliable desert ops platform resulted in Britain's Special Air Service (SAS) adopting the Series IIA 90 Land Rover for its operational requirements. With a wheelbase of 109 inches, the larger Series II could carry more stores and support longer range operations than its predecessor. The SAS painted their Land Rovers pink - granted, not the most macho of paint schemes, but one that was found to provide excellent camouflage in the desert. These 'Pink Panthers' or 'Pinkies', as they'd come to be known, would serve the Regiment well for nearly two decades.
Pictured above is a vintage 'Pink Panther' Land Rover of the type operated by the SAS Mobility Troop. In use with the 22nd SAS Regiment from the late 60s right up until the mid-80s, these were based on the Series IIA 90 Land Rover. The pink paint scheme was said to be highly effective in the desert. Though, they were eventually replaced by the Land Rover 110 Series and its more subdued beige camouflage scheme.
