A HISTORY OF MAKING HISTORY
The lucky few journalists who were there on June 17, 1970 knew they were witnessing the birth of a legend. None of them had seen or driven anything like it. For a full-time sport-utility vehicle, the Range Rover was amazingly quick – accelerating faster than most road cars at that time, and comfortably cruising at over 90 mph.
How was this possible? None of the journalists really cared – they just wanted one. And once the news was out, so did everyone else. Like the rock star who fulfilled a dream by driving across the Sahara to Lagos, Nigeria in his Range Rover. Like the 1972 British Trans-America Expedition, which took a convoy of Range Rovers from Alaska to Cape Horn. They were the first cars ever to complete that journey. Like the curators of the Louve, who felt Range Rover was such a work of art, they put it on display.
Indeed, the first generation Range Rover was so far ahead of its time, it remained in production until 1996. By then, other manufacturers had finally unraveled the genius of its soft-sprung, long-travel suspension. But Range Rover had already moved on.
In 1994, the second-generation Range Rover arrived, with an all-new engine, a sharper silhouette and an even more advanced suspension system – this time electronically controlled. Now Range Rover has reached its third evolutionary milestone. New Range Rover retains the trademark blend of toughness and luxury that's never out of place, whatever the event, whatever the terrain – but it's tougher and more luxurious than ever. What strikes you first is the sheer beauty and sophistication of New Range Rover, not just in its overall styling, but in every single detail. That's why there's no mud in the pictures we've taken. Nothing should spoil the view.
