Not only did Land Rover celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Range Rover last week with the unveiling of its newest, "smallest, lightest, greenest" Range Rover yet, the 2012 Evoque, but they also announced that Victoria Beckham, the former Spice Girl, had been appointed as the company’s newest Creative Design Director.
Phil Popham, managing director of Land Rover, said that Beckham is “the newest Creative Design Director appointed to collaborate with our design team.”
The Spice Girl-turned-fashion-designer attended the gala event at Kensington Palace hosted in conjunction with Vogue UK to assist in the unveiling of the new 2012 Range Rover Evoque.
Land Rover executives also announced an important upcoming milestone for the Range Rover, it will roll its millionth vehicle off the assembly line this summer.
Beckham who has been named Range Rover's new Creative Design Director has been brought on board to help with the Evoque, which started its life in 2008 as the LRX concept car, to assist in making it appeal to the modern, well-heeled women.
Beckham, 35, will lend her "posh" design sense and give advice regarding the interior design on future special editions of the car, starting with the Special Edition Range Rover Evoque, the line’s first purpose-built lightweight, three-door, green savvy, sport utility-coupe.
"She's established herself in her own right as a designer and she has some interesting perspectives. She's owned Range Rovers for years and years so it will be interesting to get an outside point of view, somebody that's really aware of the luxury goods sector of the market which is really important to us," said Range Rover Design Director Gerry McGovern.
In 2008, Beckham launched her own ready-to-wear collection that became an instant hit with fashion critics and her designs are often seen worn by celebrities when walking the red carpet.
